Cathedral Links:
Getting there and Parking
By Road
Getting to Carlisle is easy, getting to the cathedral is not so easy for those unfamiliar with the area, especially in view of the daytime and Saturday parking restrictions. The large car parking complex near to the railway station (Viaduct or West Walls) is the best is to make for. (Coaches should park on the Devonshire Walk car park)
From the South (A6)
On reaching the Citadel traffic lights (by Railway Station) go straight ahead and turn next left at lights onto Victoria Viaduct. Get in the right lane and turn at the lights into the road leading to car parks.
From the North (A7, B6264, A689)
Cross Eden Bridge and get in the right hand lane (West) at the Hardwicke Circus roundabout (traffic lights at peak time only morning and evening). Take the last exit onto Castle Way, A595 to West Cumbria, (The Cathedral is signed to the left but route is tricky to follow and parking limited). Pass the Castle on your right and turn left at the next traffic lights onto the B5269. Turn left at the next traffic lights, at the foot of a large chimney, into Junction Street. Go straight over the first set of lights, cross the river and turn left at the next set into the car park complex.
From the East (A 69 or M6)
Follow signs to the West. When you reach the Hardwicke Circus roundabout, take the first exit and follow the same route as from the North.
From the West (A595)
When the Wigton Road reaches the Caldewgate roundabout go straight ahead, taking the right hand lane. Turn right at the traffic lights onto the B5269 heading towards a large chimney. Follow the directions from the North to reach the car parks.
Parking
There are several available in the city centre.
The directions above direct you to the large Viaduct and West Walls car
parks which are
closest to the cathedral. To minimise walking turn right under the
railway (height restriction) and immediately left into the West Walls
car park (rates may be cheaper at the far end). From the car park there
are several sets
of steps up to West Walls at the back of the Close. In working hours
there is access from this side, at other times the only entrance to the
Close is on Castle Street (follow the signs).
Parking at Cathedral - on practice night only, but there are two spaces for disabled parking for services.
By Rail
The station is ten minutes walk from the Cathedral.
Carlisle is served
by:
Direct services to Newcastle and the North East.
The scenic Settle-Carlisle line starts here, passing through the Eden Valley, across the Pennines to Skipton and Leeds.
The Cumbrian Coast line serves West Cumbria, eventually rejoining the West Coast main line at Lancaster.
Eating & Drinking
Big selection in the city of pubs, restaurants, coffee shops and take-aways.
Toilets
Available in the Fratry Tea Rooms opposite the south door, during opening hours only. Remember it is a LONG climb & walk to the ringing room from here! Disabled facilities available during the day.
