Eastern Branch
The Eastern Branch includes the Eden Valley with the Settle Carlisle Railway and the highest peak in the Pennines, with wonderful walking areas, (provided you keep off the Warcop Firing Ranges!) and some interesting churches. Kirkby Stephen and Appleby (with their opposing views in the Civil War) have their ancient markets and Orton, on the fringes of the Howgill Fells area, an established farmers' market. Penrith is near the centre of the branch territory, with Great Salkeld and Lazonby nestling close beneath the Pennines. At Shap , close to the famous railway summit, there is a memorial in the churchyard dedicated to the memory of labourers who died while constructing the line. To the north is Carlisle, flanked by Brampton to the east and Thursby on the west. West from Penrith the A66 takes you past Greystoke to Keswick in the heart of the Northern Lake District.
